Lapis Lazuli with its deep blue color and golden flecks, has been prized by cultures around the world for over 6,000 years. The finest specimens of this material come from the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan. This mining region, set precariously high up in the harsh mountains, has been producing lapis since 700 B.C. making it the world’s oldest continuous commercial gemstone mining region. Other sources of Lapis Lazuli are Russia and Chile both of which produce fine material.

A typical Lapis Lazuli gem has a deep blue background of lazurite, white veins of calcite and golden specs of pyrite (Fool’s Gold) making this stone easily recognizable. The stone is typically fashioned into flat cut pieces for inlay, cabochons and beads. While plenty of natural gem quality material is available, some lapis is dyed to enhance the depth of blue.

Lapis Lazuli is a 5 – 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so if it is hit by a harder object, it can get damaged and scratched over time – but jewelry made with Lapis Lazuli can be worn for generations if cared for correctly.

Known as a stone of truth – Lapis Lazuli is thought to positively influence friendships and honesty, encouraging harmonious relationships for those that wear it. This amazing gemstone carries positive energy, can strengthen the mind and help its wearer to overcome issues relating to grief, trauma and depression.
